Faith Development – A Lenten Journey for 2022

Faith Development - A Congregational Lenten Journey for 2022
This is your Invitation to take part in our …

… Congregational Lenten Journey of Faith (2022)

“Parables, Prayers & Promises”

Ash Wednesday (March 2nd) to Easter (April 17th)

The Season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes on Easter Sunday. The word Lent comes from an old English expression meaning lengthening, which refers to the increasing number of daylight hours this time of year.

In the Christian tradition, the 40-day period of Lent is a time of preparation and spiritual journeying toward Easter. (Lent is actually 46 days long, as Sundays are not counted.) During Lent Christians are encouraged to dedicate time each day to learn about Jesus – his teachings, ministry, and life events – and to reflect upon their own faith journey.

The Faith Development Team has chosen Parables, Prayers & Promises to guide us on the spiritual journey through Lent. This is a daily devotional book prepared by Martha Martin, now the minister at Kingston Road United Church in Scarborough. Each day’s Bible reading focuses on Jesus, and a thoughtful reflection follows. There is a prayer for each day too, written by Alydia Smith.

We want to make Martha’s resource book available to every member and friend of Cambridge Church, including all those who watch our live-streamed Sunday Services.

Now, here’s the thing about Parable, Prayers & Promises. It was published five years ago, so the books are sold out. However, fortunately it is available in digital format, as a downloaded book, and it costs only about $6.00. You can read it on a Kindle device or a Kobo device, or a computer (or tablet or smart phone).

So, if you own a Kindle device, you can download the book right away from Amazon. Similarly, if you own a Kobo device you can download the book easily from Chapters.

If you have neither a Kindle nor Kobo device, you are still in luck! There is a way to download and read the book on your computer (or tablet or smart phone). This requires a number of steps, but we can assist you.

We have created step-by-step instructions for downloading the book onto your computer. It is posted here for you on the Cambridge Web Site, or just Email me at JimPhelps@cogeco.ca and I will send it to you.

Should you have a computer-savvy friend, child, or grandchild you may wish to ask them for help. I can also Email the instructions directly to them. We have also recruited a few members of the congregation who are able and willing to walk you through the process of downloading the book to your computer.

So, to summarize: The Faith Development Team invites everyone to participate in this spiritual journey through Lent, by downloading Parables, Prayers and Promises and using it as your daily guide.

Although this will take each of us on a personal faith journey, we will also be aware of other Cambridge Church members and friends as our companions along the way. Each day we will all be reading and reflecting upon the same theme.

We anticipate that the experience will enhance the meaning of the Lenten Season for everyone who participates. Also, it may provide a renewed sense of the Church as a believing community, following the way of Jesus in today’s world.

Finally, to those who want to download the resource book to your computer (or tablet or smart phone):  I recommend you do this early because it can be a bit tricky. Ask me for the step-by-step instruction file, then try it yourself or request help. Of course, you can always phone the church office and Pam will pass the message along.

Thank you,
